Width: escorts are required on two-lane primary and secondary roads if any part of the load extends left of the centerline, or the movement is 14' or wider. On Interstate, divided, or four-lane highways with a left-turn center lane, escorts are required for movements 15' or wider (the Wyoming Highway Patrol may require additional escorts based on width). Length: on two-lane primary and secondary roads, escorts are required for movements 110' or more overall, or extending left of the centerline at any point; on Interstate and divided highways, escorts are at WHP discretion. Rear overhang of 25' or more requires one rear escort on all highways. Height of 17' or more requires a front escort with a height-measuring device on all highways (escorts for heights under 17' are at the issuing authority's discretion). Overweight movements with special restrictions from the Bridge Department require a rear escort on all highways, with an additional front escort possible on primary/secondary highways.

The steer axle permit maximum is 600 lbs per inch of tire width.

A temporary trip permit (single trip into, within, or out of Wyoming, up to 96 hours) costs $20 for a single unit or $40 for a legal combination (one or more power units), for owners meeting another jurisdiction's registration requirements. A temporary fuel permit (in lieu of a gasoline/diesel license and tax, up to 96 hours) costs $7.50 for a single unit or $15 for a legal combination. Both are obtainable at a port of entry upon entering the state.

A permit is required before operating an oversize or overweight vehicle on a Wyoming state highway. If a truck exceeds its weight limitation, it may unload at its destination without penalty for a first violation if the destination is within one mile of where the illegal weight was determined; subsequent violations are subject to penalty. Non-compliance fines start at $120, with a uniform appearance deposit adding $20 court costs, $10 court automation fee, and $10 civil legal services fee.

Movement of an oversize load is generally permitted only during daylight hours, except: a permitted combination unit up to 110', a single unit up to 75', a load up to 10' wide on the Interstate only, and an escorted vehicle/load over 10' wide on Interstates or over 8.5' on primary/secondary roads. Additional restrictions apply to vehicles/loads over 18'.

Over-width loads require amber clearance lights on each front corner, red lights on the rear of the load and each extremity/projection, and an amber rotating, flashing, or strobe light on the vehicle. Over-length loads require a red lamp and reflector on each rear corner or extremity of the rear overhang. "Oversize Load" signs are required front and rear, black letters on a yellow background. Red or fluorescent orange flags 12 inches square are required at the four corners of the vehicle/load, at any extremity wider than the front or rear of the vehicle/load, and on a rear overhang of 4 feet or more (1 flag if under 2 feet wide, 2 flags if 2 feet or wider).

Tire chains are permitted for safety in snow, ice, or similar conditions. Studded tires are permitted if approved by the superintendent and do not materially injure the highway surface; the superintendent may restrict travel to snow-tire- or chain-equipped vehicles when hazardous. Minimum tread depth is 4/32 inch on the front wheels of a bus, truck, or truck-tractor, or 2/32 inch in other cases.

Expect the unexpected — reaction time is directly tied to speed, so take extra care in work zones. Don't tailgate, pay attention to signs indicating lane changes or flaggers, obey road crew flaggers (who carry the same authority as a posted sign), stay alert and reduce distractions, keep up with traffic flow by merging as soon as possible, and stay calm and patient — frustration and impatience lead to rash decisions and further delays.
