Why route planning is more than mapping software
Consumer mapping tools optimize for distance and time, not legal compliance — they don't know about a state's active bridge weight restriction, a permit that only authorizes a specific set of roads, or a driver's remaining hours. A route that looks fastest on a map can be one a truck legally can't run.
Fuel efficiency as a routing outcome, not an afterthought
Speed and idling both move fuel economy directly — industry data puts each 1 mph above roughly 65 mph as costing about 0.1 mpg, with idle burning something like 0.6 to 1 gallon of fuel per hour for nothing. Real-world Class 8 fuel economy runs around 6–7.5 mpg per the NACFE Fleet Fuel Study, and deliberate routing — not defaulting to whatever a GPS suggests — is one of the more overlooked levers for keeping a fleet's average nearer the top of that range.
