Loads exceeding 16' in height require at least one front escort/pilot car. Loads exceeding 14' in width require at least one front and one rear escort/pilot car, though the rear escort may be eliminated if the load carries a warning light on top, a warning light on the rear (2–8 feet above the road surface), and a compliant warning sign per K.S.A. 8-1911. Superloads require at least one front and one rear escort/pilot car, with an additional escort if the permit requires slowing at bridges. Large structures also require at least one front and one rear escort/pilot car.

Maximum gross weight in Kansas is 85,500 lbs (80,000 lbs on Interstate highways); single axle weight is 20,000 lbs and tandem axle weight is 34,000 lbs. Officers may tolerate a 5% difference up to 1,500 lbs — a maximum tolerance of 1,000 lbs on a single axle and 1,500 lbs on a tandem axle.

Permitted loads may generally travel sunrise to sunset, 7 days a week, unless the permit restricts otherwise. Vehicles wider than 12' may not travel at night, and vehicles over 8'6" wide may not operate on the Kansas Turnpike at night. Loads exceeding 14' are restricted to 8:30 AM–4:30 PM, Monday through Thursday. Loads exceeding 16' are rarely authorized on the Turnpike.

"Oversize Load" signs are required for all shipments moving under permit that exceed 12' wide. Red flags are required on the widest part of the load, and to the rear if the load is overlength; if overhang exceeds legal limits, a flag is required at the end of the shipment, along with a lamp to increase visibility in fog or reduced visibility.

Tire chains are permissible when required for safety because of snow, ice, or similar conditions. Solid rubber tires must have rubber at least 1 inch thick above the flange around the entire periphery, and no metal tire may contact the roadway. No protuberance other than rubber may project beyond the tread, except farm machinery, tire chains, approved studded traction equipment, or approved metallic/nonmetallic traction studs (subject to use restrictions the Secretary of Transportation may set). It is unlawful to operate a vehicle with a single tire on a hub configured for dual tires, except for trucks registered at 20,000 lbs or less, vehicles with approved wide-base single tires, certain triple-axle configurations, or emergencies.

On the Kansas Turnpike, Chief Engineer/General Manager or Turnpike Highway Patrol Commander approval is required before a mobile home can be transported (no additional permit needed once approved). Mobile homes up to 12'6" wide may move 24/7; over 12'6" up to 14' wide are limited to daylight hours; 14' and wider are limited to daylight hours Monday–Thursday, 8:30 AM–4:30 PM, with at least one escort vehicle required for widths over 14' on the Turnpike. Overall length may be as long as 119'. All mobile homes must be towed by a truck-tractor specifically designed and equipped for the purpose.
