The permittee is responsible for checking for overheight restrictions. A load over 16' high requires a front escort with a height pole; a load exceeding 17'6" high must submit a route survey; a load over 17' high must be accompanied by a licensed signal contractor through all signal-controlled intersections. Length: over 85' on mountainous two-lane highways requires a front pilot; over 110' on non-mountainous two-lane highways requires a front pilot; over 115' on four-lane highways requires a rear pilot. Overhang: front overhang over 15' requires a front pilot; rear overhang over 25' requires a rear pilot. Pilot escort drivers must obtain and maintain state certification.

Maximum load per tire is 600 lbs/inch on the steering axle and 500 lbs/inch on all other axles; axles weighing over 10,000 lbs need at least four tires unless equipped with wide-base tires (limited to 500 lbs/inch). The Federal Bridge Formula "B" governs total weight on groups of two or more consecutive axles. Under the Western Region Agreement, permit maximums are 600 lbs per inch of tire width, 21,500 lbs per single axle, 43,000 lbs per tandem axle, 53,000 lbs per tridem (8–13 ft wheelbase), and 160,000 lbs gross vehicle weight.

A Laden Weight Registration Trip permit, purchased at the first port facility, is valid for 72 hours and multiple trips: $60 for 10,001–30,000 lbs GVW, $70 for 30,001–60,000 lbs, and $80 for 60,000 lbs up to the legal max. A temporary IFTA fuel permit is available at every Port of Entry for vehicles subject to IFTA (2-axle single units over 26,000 lbs, single units with 3+ axles regardless of weight, or combinations over 26,000 lbs GCW/GVWR).

Travel is generally permitted sunrise to sunset. Loads up to 12' may operate with proper lights; loads over 12' up to 14' may operate at night with an escort car. At the Eisenhower Tunnel, loads over 13'11" high must use the US 6 bypass, and wide loads over 11' must pull over and call for tunnel clearance; other Colorado highways carry additional time restrictions under 2 CCR 601-4 (401).

An LVC (Longer Vehicle Combination) is prohibited from travel at any time on Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day (with the adjoining Friday/Monday also restricted if the holiday falls on a weekend). An LVC may travel on New Year's Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day, except that travel is prohibited on the adjoining Friday/Monday if the holiday falls on a weekend. Any other extra-legal vehicle/load is prohibited from travel 6:00 AM–9:00 PM on Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day (plus noon–9:00 PM on the adjoining Friday/Monday if the holiday falls on a weekend), and from noon–9:00 PM on the Friday preceding Memorial Day and Labor Day.

Yellow warning lights are required — one on the cab and two or three at the rear corners/extremity of the load. "Oversized Load" signs (reading "Wide Load"/"Wide," "Long Load"/"Long," or "Oversize Load"/"Oversize" as applicable) must be either 5' wide by 10" high with a 1" brush stroke and 8" letters, or 7' wide by 18" high with a 1.41" brush stroke and 10" letters, black lettering on yellow. Flags are required at all four corners of any extremities of wide/over-length loads.

When the chain law is in effect, drivers are notified which vehicles must chain up and where. Metal chains must have two circular loops connected by at least nine evenly spaced cross-chains; commercial vehicles with four or more drive wheels must chain four wheels (dual tire chains acceptable). Approved alternative traction devices include wheel sanders and the AutoSock; tire cables are not a permitted alternative. Chain Law Level 1: single-drive-axle combination vehicles must chain all four drive wheels, other commercial vehicles need snow tires or chains. Chain Law Level 2: all commercial vehicles must chain up — single and tandem drive axle combination vehicles chain four drive wheels, buses chain two. Vehicles on I-70 between milepost 133 (Dotsero) and 259 (Morrison) from September 1 to May 31 must carry sufficient chains to comply with the chain law at all times.

There is no overall length requirement for truck-tractor semitrailer combinations as long as the trailer does not exceed 57'4".

Construction zones include equipment, workers, and daily changes in road alignment. Expect the unexpected, slow down, keep a safe distance from crews and equipment, heed posted signs, obey flaggers (a flagger has the same authority as a regulatory sign), and stay alert with minimal distractions.

A modular or manufactured home with open sides is prohibited from travel unless fully enclosed with paneling — at least 0.5 mil plastic sheathing backed by grillwork no larger than 4' by 4' squares, or reinforced polyethylene wrap (grillwork not required in that case); ready-made poly tarps or tarp rolls are not permitted. Overall width is based on the home's total width excluding eaves, provided the base width does not exceed 14' and total eave width does not exceed 2'.
