Idaho classifies routes as Red, Black, or White, each with its own escort thresholds. Red routes: width 8'10"–10' needs 1 front escort, 10'1"–12'6" needs 1 front and 1 rear; length over 75' needs 1 front escort, and combined length/width over 75'/8'7"–12'6" needs 1 front and 1 rear. Black routes: width 12'1"–14' needs 1 front and 1 rear; length over 100' needs 1 front escort; combined length/width over 100'/12'1"–18' needs 1 front and 1 rear. White routes: width 15'1"–18' needs 1 rear escort.

A permit is required for weights exceeding 80,000 lbs.

A 120-hour fuel permit ($60) is available separately or combined with the 120-hour Registration Permit for carriers operating interstate without a current IFTA license, for vehicles over 26,000 lbs using diesel, propane, or natural gas. The 120-hour temporary permit (valid 5 days) costs: nothing if the power unit is Idaho-registered and the trailer is registered in Idaho or another state; $60 if the power unit is not Idaho-registered but the trailer is; and $60 if the power unit is Idaho-registered but the trailer is not (or when hauling piggyback).

Fines start around $300 and can exceed $2,500, with county jail also a possible penalty for severe violations. Repeat violations within a 12-month period can carry fines of several thousand dollars or up to 6 months in jail.

Lights are only required for nighttime travel — defined as 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise — and may be steady or flashing as long as they're visible. Vehicles may move 7 days a week, with nighttime travel allowed if stated on the permit and proper lighting is used; holiday travel and city-specific rules are listed on the permit.

Studded snow tires are permissible from October 1 to April 30; tire chains are not specifically restricted, though officials advise against studded tires on bare roadways unless conditions warrant them. Minimum legal tread depth is 2/32 inch. Solid rubber tires must have at least 1 inch of rubber above the flange around the entire periphery. Chains may be required at Lookout Pass or Fourth of July Pass on I-90, or Lolo Pass on SH-12, with "chains required beyond this point" signage posted and advance notice given.

Multitrip permits up to 12 months may be issued to transport indivisible loads to an alternative energy construction site or staging area, allowing up to 256,000 lbs gross vehicle weight while keeping single-axle weight at or below 20,000 lbs; the permit-issuing authority may add other restrictions.

Idaho Transportation Department policy is to plan, design, construct, maintain, and operate safe and efficient temporary traffic control zones, with law enforcement present in work zones. Avoid distracted driving — an additional $50 penalty applies for exceeding the posted work-zone speed limit, and drivers should slow further in poor weather, keeping speed consistent with traffic flow until signage indicates it's safe to resume normal speed.

All manufactured homes moved on their own axles require licensing (permanent or temporary), except new homes being transported prior to first retail sale or to the initial setup location of the original purchaser. Liability insurance of $300,000 is required for a permittee's own manufactured home, or $750,000 when hauling for hire. Maximum length is 80 feet including tongue; maximum width is 16 feet at the base and 18 feet overall including eaves. Axles and brakes must meet CFR Title 24 standards for the home's model year, except 16-foot-wide homes (at the base) require a minimum of 4 axles and brakes on at least 3 axles. The unit must have stop lights, turn signals, and tail lights.

A minimum speed of 25 mph must be maintained, with a maximum of 60 mph. Drivers must hold a current Class A or B commercial driver's license.
