Hours of Service Monitoring

Federal hours-of-service rules set hard limits on how long a driver can be on duty and behind the wheel. We monitor those limits in real time so dispatch decisions respect them automatically.

How we handle it

We monitor ELD data in real time against each driver's available hours, so dispatch decisions account for actual remaining drive time instead of assumptions.

The federal hours-of-service framework

Under 49 CFR Part 395, property-carrying drivers are generally limited to 11 hours of driving within a 14-hour on-duty window after 10 consecutive hours off duty, with a required 30-minute break after 8 cumulative hours of driving, and a 60-hour/7-day or 70-hour/8-day cap that resets with a 34-hour restart (the additional requirement that a restart include two periods between 1–5 a.m. is currently suspended and not in effect). These limits leave very little margin for a dispatch decision that ignores them.

Why real-time monitoring matters more than end-of-week review

An HOS violation is created the moment a driver is dispatched into a run their remaining hours can't cover — reviewing logs afterward only catches the problem once it's already happened. FMCSA's crash causation research found fatigue coded as a factor in roughly 13% of large-truck crashes studied, which is exactly the outcome real-time hours monitoring is built to prevent.
