On two-lane highways: width over 12' up to 14' needs 1 front escort; width over 14' needs 2 escorts (front and rear); length over 80' needs 1 front escort; length over 100' needs 2 (front and rear); height 15'9" or over needs 2 (front and rear), and all public utilities and railroads along the route must be contacted in advance. On multi-lane highways: width over 12' up to 16' needs 1 rear escort; width over 16' (on all highways and roads) needs 2 (front and rear); height 15'9" or over needs 2 (front and rear). For mobile homes and boats on two-lane highways: over 80' long needs 1 pilot; width over 12' up to 14' needs 1 front escort; width over 14' up to 16' needs 2 (front and rear). On multi-lane highways, width over 14' up to 16' needs 1 rear escort.

A 72-Hour Commercial Vehicle Registration Trip Permit ($12.00, no refunds) allows an unregistered commercial motor vehicle or trailer to be legally registered in Oklahoma on a short-term basis, effective up to 72 hours from purchase. It is required for operators eligible for apportioned registration but not currently registered for Oklahoma, and for unregistered commercial trailers traveling in or through the state; it covers interstate or intrastate registration and can be purchased online, through Comdata (800-749-6058), or J.J. Keller (800-231-5266).

Knowingly or willfully violating weight limitations imposed by law or permit is a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $1,000; it may also be treated as contempt of the Corporation Commission, carrying a fine of up to $500.

Oversized loads may move only between 1/2 hour before sunrise and 1/2 hour after sunset. No movement is permitted on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, or Christmas Day.

There is no specific lighting requirement mentioned for the hauling vehicle or load. All oversized loads require "OVERSIZE LOAD" or "WIDE LOAD" signs front and rear, at least 5 feet long by 14 inches high, with 8-inch letters and a 1 1/8-inch stroke on a "Highway Yellow" background. Minimum 18-inch square red or bright orange flags are required at all four corners and any protrusion/extension, including a rear overhang beyond 4'.

No metal tire may contact a hard-surfaced highway except by special permit. No protuberance other than rubber may project beyond the tread, except tire chains for safety, or metal/porcelain traction studs designed to provide resiliency (no more than 3% of the aggregate traction surface, protruding no more than 3/32 inch). A tire may not have any exposed ply or cord, and may not be regrooved or recut below the original groove depth (except tires specifically designed and marked for regrooving).

The Department of Public Safety may issue annual permits for overweight non-divisible loads with a GVW up to 120,000 lbs, transferable or non-transferable among vehicles.
