Civil escort requirements differ by daylight vs. darkness and freeway/Interstate vs. secondary roads. Roughly: one escort during daylight on freeways/Interstates for widths over 14', lengths over 120', or qualifying overhangs; one escort during daylight on secondary roads for widths over 12', lengths over 105', or overhang over 20'; one pilot/escort during darkness on freeways/Interstates for widths up to 14' that exceed 10' width, 105' length, or 10' overhang. Two escorts are required during daylight on freeways/Interstates for widths over 16' or heights over 16', and on secondary roads for widths over 14', heights over 16', or lengths over 120'. Police escorts (at all hours) require at least one for lengths over 175' on any road type, and at least two for widths over 20' (17' on secondary), heights over 17'6", or lengths over 200' — the exact number is determined by area, time, difficulty of travel, and local/state rules; contact 801-965-4518 or the local police station.

Trip permits are available in lieu of IRP plates, and fuel permits in lieu of IFTA licensing, both online or through a permitting service for an additional fee.

A vehicle found unlawful on height, width, length, or weight may be required to park until adjusted. A violation carries a fine of $200 (first) or $500 (second or subsequent within three years).

Travel is prohibited (for loads over 10' wide, 105' overall length, or 14' high) on Christmas, New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving. Holiday restrictions: a Monday holiday prohibits travel from 2 PM the previous Friday until daylight Tuesday; a Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday holiday prohibits travel from 2 PM the day before until daylight the day after; a Friday holiday prohibits travel from 2 PM Thursday until daylight the following Monday. Nighttime travel is generally permitted, with restrictions noted on the permit.

Tow vehicles must use low-beam headlights day and night. At night or in reduced visibility, the front overhang needs an amber light and the rear overhang red clearance lights, with amber lights marking front/center extremities and red lights the rear. Loads over 10' wide, 14' high, or 105' long need an "Oversize Load" sign — 7 feet long, 18 inches high, black 10-inch letters with a 1 5/8-inch stroke on a yellow background. Red or fluorescent orange flags 18 inches square are required on all extremities of loads exceeding 10 feet in width.

Tungsten carbide stud tires are permitted during the winter periods of October 15–December 31 and January 1–March 31 each year, with studs not projecting more than .050 inch beyond the tread. Tire chains are permitted for safety in snow, ice, or similar conditions; vehicles likely to encounter such conditions must carry chains for at least one driving wheel on each side, and signs designate where chains are required. Minimum tread depth is 2/32 inch.

UDOT may issue overweight permits for non-divisible loads up to 29,000 lbs single axle, 50,000 lbs tandem, 61,750 lbs tridem, and 125,000 lbs GVW, on a semi-annual or annual basis; loads over 125,000 lbs GVW are eligible only for single-trip permits.
