Maximum overall gross weight on any group of two or more consecutive axles is set by the formula W = 500[LN/(N−1) + 12N + 36]. Two consecutive sets of tandem axles may each carry 34,000 lbs if the distance between the first and last axles of the sets is 36 feet or more. Maximum permit weight on tandem axles is 60,000 lbs under the Purple Weight Chart (single-trip permits only).

Out-of-state commercial vehicles with a combined GVWR of 10,001 lbs or more require a registration permit before entering the state. Fuel tax permits are required for vehicles 26,001 lbs or more, or any vehicle with three or more axles. For Nevada-based carriers, Motor Carrier branch offices issue 24-hour permits (120 hours for buses) for temporary registration and special fuel taxes — registration fees are $6 plus 15 cents per mile, and special fuel permits are a flat $31.

It is unlawful to operate or move a vehicle/load described in NRS 484D.615 or 484D.685–725 over a highway without first obtaining a permit, or to violate or evade any term or condition of an issued permit.

Travel is generally permitted 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset, except: loads not exceeding 12' wide, 15' high, 110' long are permitted for night travel; loads not exceeding 14' wide, 15' high, 110' long are permitted for weekend travel (except in restricted areas); holiday travel (New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day) is usually permitted for loads not exceeding 12' wide, 15' high, 110' long. Spring thaw weight restrictions apply to some secondary routes roughly February through April.

All oversize vehicles (over 8'6" wide) must display "OVERSIZE LOAD" or "OVERSIZE" signs, 10-inch black letters on a yellow background, and run with low-beam headlights on. Warning flags — solid red or fluorescent, 18 inches square — are required at outermost corners and on any projections, used only during daylight hours. During darkness: two amber steady-burning lights at the extreme front, amber steady-burning lights midway on both sides, and for an overhang of 4' or more, two amber steady-burning lights indicating the maximum width — all visible from 500 feet. A Nevada Light Permit is required to run a flashing/revolving amber warning light, or to travel with one turned off but uncovered.

Tire chain usage is permitted only for hazardous weather or related conditions, and may not damage the highway surface. "Tire chain" includes a device providing additional traction on a slippery surface, or a snow tire with tread (ribs, lugs, blocks, or buttons) at least 3/16 inch deep in any two adjacent grooves at any point on the tread.

Active (recurring annual) — Nevada spring thaw overweight restrictions are confirmed active February 1–April 30 each year per NDOT ODVP LOI 5-25 (revised 2025-06-18), affecting Green and Purple weight ODV permit holders on 27 enumerated state routes.

Valid for one year from issue date; NDOT recommends planning at least 30 days in advance of a desired movement. A Commodity Permit allows legal-dimension, reducible loads up to 70' in length to run over 80,000 lbs while remaining at legal axle weights. Cost: Over Dimensional Vehicle Annual — $60.

Slow to posted work zone speed limits, minimize distractions such as cell phone use, make work zone merges in advance rather than weaving, only change lanes when necessary and signal properly, keep a safe following distance, don't tailgate (rear-end collisions are the most common work zone crash), obey flaggers and warning signs, and plan ahead. The Department of Transportation may issue a special or multiple-trip limited-time permit authorizing movement of a manufactured or mobile home (or similar structure) in excess of the maximum width, but not exceeding 120 inches exclusive of appendages (which may not extend beyond 3 inches on either side). Permits are issued only to licensed manufacturers, dealers, owners, and transporters, and the insurer must furnish evidence of $100,000 bodily injury coverage per person, $300,000 per crash for two or more persons, and $50,000 property damage coverage. The permit is not valid between sunset and sunrise. "Wide-load" signs and red flags are required on the front of the towing vehicle and the rear of the home, with low-beam headlights as an additional warning. The driver must prevent traffic congestion, pulling off the pavement where safe if necessary to let traffic pass. When two or more homes/structures over 120 inches wide travel the same highway in the same direction, towing vehicles must maintain at least 1,000 feet between them.
