Pilot cars are required when a load equals or exceeds 12'4" in width, 110' in length, or 14'6" in height. One escort precedes on an undivided highway and follows on a divided highway. Loads over 14'6" high require an escort with a height stick traveling in front. Loads between 14'4" and 17' wide require one rear escort on a dual-lane divided highway, and two escorts (front and rear) on all other roads. Escort vehicles must have at least 4 wheels, a maximum gross registered weight of 11,000 lbs, a flashing amber light mounted on top, an oversize load sign visible to approaching traffic, radio communication with the permitted vehicle, and must stay within 500 feet of it.

Also limited to 800 lbs per inch of rim width, subject to the axle limits above. A non-divisible load exceeding legal dimensions requires an Indiana oversize/overweight vehicle permit.

A 5-day trip permit (issued only through permit services, $50 plus service charges) authorizes operation in or through Indiana for five consecutive days in lieu of an annual license and quarterly tax. A 3-day IRP trip permit is required for out-of-state carriers properly registered and insured in their base state but not apportioned for Indiana; it must be secured prior to entry and remain with the vehicle, and unused permits are non-refundable.

Size and weight violations are a continuing offense, prosecuted in the county where the unlawful operation occurred; once convicted or acquitted in one county, a second prosecution in another county is barred. All violations except weight violations of 5,000 lbs or more are Class C Infractions (which may also suspend vehicle registration up to 90 days); an exception from conviction applies on non-Interstate highways if the violation is under 1,000 lbs. Violations of 5,000–10,000 lbs are Class B Infractions; over 10,000 lbs is a Class A Infraction. An infraction fine ranges from $1 to $10,000, with registration suspension of 1–90 days. Oversize vehicles pay a flat $189 fine.

Loads up to 10' wide, 13'6" high, 110' long, and under 200,000 lbs may travel continuously, 7 days a week. Loads 10'–14'4" wide, up to 15' high, or over 110' long may travel 7 days a week during daylight hours (1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset). Loads between 14'4" and 16' wide may travel daylight hours Monday–Friday only. Loads over 16' wide, over 15' high, or over 200,000 lbs GVW may travel Monday–Friday, 8:30 AM–3:30 PM. Permitted vehicles are restricted on state highways from noon the last weekday before, until 1/2 hour before sunrise the day after: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

An "OVERSIZE LOAD" sign is required front and rear — 6–8 feet long, 18" high, black 12-inch letters with a 2-inch stroke on a yellow background. Two red or fluorescent orange 18-inch square flags are required at the widest extremities on all over-width or over-length loads. Low-beam headlights must be on while transporting an oversize load.

Tire chains are permitted when required for safety because of snow, ice, or similar conditions. From October 1 to May 1, tires with ice grips or studs of wear-resisting material may be used. Solid rubber tires must have rubber at least 1 inch thick above the flange around the entire periphery, and no protuberance other than rubber may project beyond the tread — except farm machinery, safety chains, and studded tires (October 1 to May 1). A vehicle may be equipped year-round with retractable-stud tires provided the studs stay retracted from May 2 to September 30.

A manual county lookup is required — Indiana frost-law, spring-load, and posted-road updates are compiled into a workbook of county-level links (live postings, recurring official notices, ordinance/code pages, and counties with no current public posting) rather than fetched automatically.

A 90-day or annual permit is available for oversize loads not exceeding 12'4" wide, 13'6" high, 110' long, and 80,000 lbs, valid for any number of trips within the permit period; it may not be used on the Indiana Toll Road. There is no annual permit for overweight.

There are four mobile home permit types: 12'4" wide, 14'4" wide, 16' wide, and a dealer permit. The 12'4" Wide permit (single trip, 90-day, or annual) covers homes up to 12'4" wide, 110' overall length, 14' high, and 80,000 lbs (subject to axle weight) — home plus hitch may not exceed 85' and the tractor may not be shorter than 12'. Fees: single trip $10, 90-day $250, annual $1,000. The 14'4" Wide permit covers up to 14'4" wide, 110' overall length, 14'6" high, and 80,000 lbs, with the same 85'/12' length rules. Fees: single trip $18, 90-day $500, annual $2,000. The 16' Wide permit covers up to 16' wide, 85' long including hitch (tractor at least 12'), 110' overall length, 14'6" high, and 80,000 lbs — fee $30. The Mobile Home Annual Dealer Permit (dealers only) covers up to 12'4" wide, 85' long including hitch (tractor at least 12'), 13'6" high, and 80,000 lbs — fee $40. Additional fees may apply for Indiana Toll Road use and for weights over 80,000 lbs.
