ALDOT may require front or rear escorts as needed. Loads over 15'6" high require a front escort with a height indicator. Loads 12'–14' wide require one front escort on two-lane roads or one rear escort on multilane roads; loads over 14' wide require both a front and rear escort on all roads. Loads over 90' up to 125' long require a single rear escort; over 125' up to 150' require front and rear escorts; over 150' require front and rear law enforcement escorts. A rear escort is required for any load extending more than 5' beyond the rear of the vehicle, and a front escort is required for any load extending 10' or more beyond the front.

Maximum weight on the Interstate Highway System is 20,000 lbs per axle and 34,000 lbs per tandem axle. Maximum overall gross weight on a group of two or more consecutive axles is determined by the bridge formula W = 500(LN/(N−1) + 12N + 36), where W is the overall gross weight, L is the distance in feet between the extremes of the axle group, and N is the number of axles in the group.

Vehicles subject to International Registration Plan (IRP) and International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) licensing must obtain an IFTA fuel license and decal and an IRP license plate and cab card before operating interstate.

Travel is permitted from 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset. No movement is permitted on Sundays or on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, or Christmas Day.

An "OVERSIZE LOAD" sign in black letters on a yellow background is required on the front and rear of the transport vehicle, 7 feet wide by 18 inches high, with 10-inch letters and a 1.4–1.5 inch brush stroke. All oversize vehicles require 18-inch square fluorescent orange or red flags at all four corners of the load. Transport vehicles must be equipped with a flashing or strobe amber light visible 360 degrees at 500 feet; escort vehicles, when required, must also carry warning lights.

Vehicles must be equipped with pneumatic tires of sufficient traction surface, with a minimum tread depth of 2/32 inch. A tire is considered unsafe if any ply or cord is exposed, or if it has a bump, bulge, tread separation, or a tread/sidewall crack or cut exceeding one inch (unless grooved for re-grooving). Tire chains or metal studded/safety spike tires are permitted for safety in snow, rain, or similar conditions. Solid rubber tires must have rubber at least one inch thick above the flange around the entire periphery.

An annual permit is valid for one year and is vehicle specific — the VIN on the permit must match the VIN of the transporting vehicle.

Slow down in work zones — workers and equipment are present to maintain and improve the highways, and speeding is a leading cause of work zone crashes. Plan ahead when traveling through a work zone to reach your destination on time.

A Single Trip Permit is valid for 5 days and covers one round trip (empty to destination, hauling load back, or vice versa); mobile homes are limited to 16' wide by 16' high. An Annual Permit limits mobile homes to 14' wide by 14' high; units 12' wide or more up to a maximum of 14' wide also require a "Routing Authorization" permit, which must accompany the Annual Permit.
