A rear overhang of 15' or more, a front overhang of 15' or more, or a total length over 99' each require a front and/or rear pilot car or escort. Night movements of shipments 10' wide or wider need at least one front escort with a flashing amber light on the rear when on a two-lane non-divided road, or one rear escort with a flashing amber light when on a two-lane divided road. Daylight movements of shipments 13' wide or wider need at least one front escort with a flashing amber light on the rear when on a two-lane non-divided road. Depending on routing, construction, load conditions, or weather, police escorts can be required for loads exceeding 20' in width.

Maximum weights allowed: 80,000 lbs overall (GVW), with no more than 12,000 lbs on the steer axle; single axle limit 20,000 lbs; tandem axle limit 34,000 lbs; tridem axle limit 42,000 lbs. Maximum permit weight is 180,000 lbs gross (daylight movement permits only) or 150,000 lbs gross (24-hour movement permits). Superload maximum gross weight is 190,000 lbs.

Additional 7-axle configurations: a tri-axle/tri-axle/tri-axle layout allows 14,000 lbs (steering) / 12' / 68,000 lbs / 28' / 68,000 lbs; a tandem/tandem/tandem layout allows 14,000 lbs / 12' / 45,333 lbs / 20' / 45,333 lbs / 20' / 45,334 lbs. For 8 axles (80,000–170,000 lbs): 14,000 lbs / 12' / 72,000 lbs (tri-axle) / 30' / 84,000 lbs (quad), or a tandem/tandem/tri-axle layout of 14,000 lbs / 12' / 43,000 lbs / 18' / 43,000 lbs / 30' / 70,000 lbs. Permits can be obtained through a permitting service (additional processing fee) or by calling 601-359-1717. If you do not hold an IFTA license and are traveling in Mississippi, fuel must be purchased within 24 hours of entering the state, with receipts kept in the vehicle.

A driver who fails or refuses to stop and submit to weighing (or who removes any portion of the load before weighing) is guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $1,000, up to 30 days in county jail, or both — plus any additional penalty for operating overweight.

Night movement may be permitted for loads not exceeding 12' wide, 150,000 lbs, 99' long, or 13'6" high. Movement is not permitted on Sunday, after noon on the day preceding, or on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, or Christmas, unless specifically permitted. Local time restrictions may also apply.

Oversize vehicles require an "Oversize Load" banner with black letters on a yellow background. Warning flags must be displayed on all corners at a height of 6 feet above the pavement for moves in excess of 10 feet but not exceeding 12 feet in width. Two 5-inch flashing amber lights must be mounted 6 feet above the pavement on the rear corners for loads exceeding 12 feet in width, and all oversize loads require flashing amber lights on the rear.

Every solid rubber tire must have rubber at least 1 inch thick above the flange around the entire periphery, and no metal tire may contact the roadway. Tire chains of reasonable proportions are permitted for safety in snow, ice, or similar conditions. Front tire tread depth must be at least 4/32 inch in any two adjacent major tread grooves at three equally spaced points around the tire.

April is Work Zone Awareness Month. Decrease speed, obey signalization and work zone speed limits, stay alert, and take an alternate route when possible — significant fines apply for work zone violations, starting at $250 and up.

An Oversize Manufactured Housing Blanket Authority may be issued for non-divisible manufactured housing more than 14' wide (not exceeding 16' wide), not exceeding 14' high, with a combined towing-vehicle-plus-housing length not exceeding 120 feet and legal weight. There is no charge for the blanket authority itself, but pre-numbered permit books must be purchased from the Department — each book contains 50 permits for $500.00 ($10.00 per permit). The permittee completes a permit form for each trip, keeps the original in the vehicle, and returns completed books to the Department.
