Trip & Fuel Permits
Out-of-state vehicles with current non-apportioned tags or non-Georgia-apportioned IRP tags need a 72-hour Trip Permit, secured before entering the state — photocopies are not accepted. The online fee is $30 and covers both interstate and intrastate operation. Georgia does not sell trip permits to Georgia-based carriers.
A 10-day Motor Fuel Use Tax Permit is available online for $16.
Fines & Violations
Violations are fined at 5 cents per pound over the allowed weight limit, including any variances. Vehicles operating without a permit are assessed damages at 125% of the standard rate. Carriers have 30 days to pay or request an administrative determination. Overweight citations are handled by the Overweight Citations Unit under the Department of Public Safety.
Running Hours & Holiday Restrictions
Flashing lights are required on the extremities of wide, long, or tall loads, visible from 500 ft, and must run continuously.
Flags, Lights & Banners
Travel is permitted from sunup to sundown, Monday through Sunday, unless the permit states otherwise. Movement is not permitted in fog, snow, or other conditions with poor visibility or traction.
Tire Regulations
Tires must have at least 2/32" tread in the major grooves and be free of cuts, breaks, or bulges. Tires marked "not for highway use" or racing tires are not permitted on public roads. Studs and chains are permitted during declared emergencies. Vehicles with four or more drive wheels must chain the outermost drive tires during declared winter emergencies. Causing an accident or blocking traffic while non-compliant can carry a fine of up to $1,000.

Manufactured Homes / Mobile Homes
Manufactured homes and modular units are defined as at least 8' wide and at least 40' long, with a total width across sections of up to 16'. Units 10'–16' wide are limited to 80' in length including the hitch. Units over 12' wide must use a tow vehicle at least 15' long with brakes on at least half of its axles (or at least 2 of 3 axles). Safety precautions, including flagging traffic, are required when crossing narrow bridges.
