An escort is needed if the load is more than 80' long or more than 12' wide. Position: on a divided highway the pilot travels to the rear of the load; on an undivided highway, to the front. The escort vehicle should be a light truck or automobile with interior and both outside mirrors, and a special amber flashing/rotary light or light bar at the extreme top of the vehicle. Signage reads "OVERSIZE LOAD" in black 8-inch letters on a yellow background, 5' wide by 12" high, on the rear bumper when following or front bumper when preceding (roof-mounted is optional). A two-way radio with a half-mile range is required. Drivers must be at least 18 years old and have held an operator's license for two consecutive years.

The minimum non-waivable fine (plus court costs) is $60 for a gross vehicle weight or axle weight violation on the Interstate Highway System, or $30 on all other highways.

Moves are not routinely permitted from 1/2 hour after sunset to 1/2 hour before sunrise, on legal holidays (New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas), or on weekends in July and August — except for equipment moving entirely within the seven northern counties. Oversize loads may travel on the Maine Turnpike from 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset (daylight hours), with total height limited to 13'6" and total width to 14'6". A local permit is required to travel through Augusta.

An "OVERSIZE LOAD" banner is required — 7' long, 18" high, black letters 10" high with a 1.5-inch stroke on a yellow background. Four 18-inch square bright red flags are required on all four corners of the extremities of an over-width load. Vehicles must run with low-beam headlights and a flashing or rotating amber light or light bar on top of the cab.

Studded tires are permitted October 2 through April 30, when icy road conditions exist; permits may be issued for use during prohibited months. Vehicles must run tires in safe operating condition — unsafe conditions include a fabric break or cut over one inch deep enough to reach the body cords, a temporary blowout patch/boot repair, a bump/bulge/knot from separation, exposed ply/cord, damaged sidewall cords, or tread worn below 2/32 inch at any point requiring gauge measurement. Tread must be measured with a gauge calibrated in 1/32-inch increments at two points at least 15 inches apart.

Workers and vehicle occupants are both vulnerable in a work zone. Slow down and drive at the posted work-zone speed, pay attention, merge as soon as safely possible, maintain a safe following distance, stay calm during delays, and always wear a seatbelt.

Mobile homes and the semitrailers used to haul modular homes must be registered before a permit is granted, and mobile homes must have a dealer or transit plate affixed to the rear. Before a mobile home permit is granted, the applicant must provide the registration information (dealer/transit plate number) and identification information (year, make, color, serial number); before a modular home permit is granted, the semitrailer's registration (plate number) and the home's serial number are required. Previously used mobile homes require a current tax release (MV-47 or MV-47E) from the town of origin (not required for homes from a sales lot or out of state).

Additional requirements apply by width, measured at the base: 11'6" wide or more requires a towing vehicle with dual wheels on the drive axle and a GVWR of at least 26,001 lbs (vehicles of at least 20,000 lbs GVWR already in mobile-home-moving service by July 1, 1995 may continue in use), plus a red or fluorescent orange warning flag on each corner, clearance lights/reflectors, and safety chains. 11'6"–13'6" wide: no travel from 1/2 hour after sunset to 1/2 hour before sunrise, or on Saturday, Sunday, legal holidays, or other Secretary-designated days. 13'6"–14'6" wide: no travel in that same window, plus no travel Friday after noon, Saturday, Sunday, holidays, or other designated days (a police escort may be required, with two additional amber lights on the configuration). 14'6" or wider: no travel in that same window, plus no travel Thursdays followed by a Friday holiday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, holidays, or other designated days — one pilot/escort vehicle is required behind the load on divided highways, and two on all other highways, with a police escort possibly required.
