No escort is required for loads up to and including 12'4" wide. For loads 12'4"–14" wide: on Interstates and designated highways, the escort is in the rear on dual-lane divided or multi-lane pavement, and in front on two-lane pavement; off those routes, two escorts (front and rear) are required, with two-way radios in the power unit and all escort vehicles. For loads over 14' wide: on Interstates and divided highways, one escort is required; on multi-lane undivided and two-lane highways, two escorts (front and rear) are required with two-way radio communication. A rear escort is required for overlength movements exceeding 90' on all highways except divided highways. A separate escort must be provided for each load — movement in convoy is not allowed. Oversize load signs (5' by 1', 8-inch letters minimum, yellow background, black lettering, visible from 300+ feet, reading "OVERSIZE LOAD") are required on escort vehicles, along with at least two red or orange fluorescent warning flags mounted at the front extremities (front escort) or rear extremities (rear escort).

Gross vehicle weight is capped at 80,000 lbs regardless of highway type. Maximum permit axle weights: single axle 20,000 lbs; tandem 46,000 lbs (no individual axle over 24,000 lbs in a multi-axle group); triple 60,000 lbs (no axle over 21,000 lbs); quadrum 72,000 lbs (no axle over 19,000 lbs).

Fines are assessed per pound exceeding the limit, with the dollar amount set by the county. Log book violations carry an approximate $300 fine per occurrence, as do grade restriction violations.

Travel is limited to 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset (exceptions may apply in certain cities/regions). No movement is allowed on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, or Christmas Day. Additional local restrictions may apply.

No light requirement is specified for the hauling vehicle itself. "OVERSIZE LOAD" or "WIDE LOAD" signs are required on the front for loads exceeding 10'6" wide; combination loads longer than 90' (or a single unit over 50') also need a sign on the rear — 7' long, 18" high, black letters on a yellow background. Red, yellow, or orange fluorescent flags at least 18" square, in good condition, are required at the extreme ends and/or projections of all oversize loads.

Studded tires may not be used between April 1 and November 1. All tires should be inspected for tread wear, knots, cuts, separations, mismatched tire types, and markings such as "reject" or "for non-highway use." All wheels except the spare should be inspected for damage and visible bolt/nut/lug condition or hub mismatch (hub caps need not be removed except on the wheel removed for brake inspection).

Manual route verification is required — Missouri does not publish a single statewide frost-law status page. The MoDOT Motor Carriers Map is the main live source for state highway size and weight restrictions; county road status still needs local confirmation.

Blanket permits may be issued for moves up to 12'4" wide and 150' overall length, with height and weight in accordance with current Missouri statutes.

MoDOT observes National Work Zone Awareness Week every April and has adjusted its statewide work zone guidelines to improve safety, reduce traveler delays, and improve consistency across the state. The state communicates upcoming projects and alternate routes, shifts work to night and off-peak hours where possible, and manages multiple projects on a route together. Drivers must obey posted reduced speed limits, avoid rushing or disrespecting workers and other drivers, and use alternate routes when available.

Annual blanket permits are available for manufactured and sectional home units up to 12'4" wide and 150' overall length, with legal height and weight. Fee: $128 for an annual blanket oversize single-commodity permit (prorated quarterly).
