One rear escort is required for loads 100 feet or more in length on Interstates, controlled-access divided highways with four or more lanes, and a lead vehicle on all other highways; two escorts (one leading, one following) are required on highways with fewer than four lanes for loads exceeding 115 feet. For over-width loads other than manufactured homes: one rear escort is required in excess of 14' on any controlled-access divided highway with four or more lanes; on other highways, loads over 14' wide require both a front and rear escort, and loads over 12' up to 14' wide require one front escort. Loads over 15' high require one escort with a clearance bar extending 6 inches above the permitted height; loads over 17' high require written agreements from utility/facility owners along the route, or a representative escort.

The Director may issue permits allowing a maximum single front/steering axle weight of 18,000 lbs and a maximum tandem front/steering axle weight of 32,000 lbs for up to 12 consecutive months, upon written application with satisfactory proof the vehicle is used solely for that purpose.

A Temporary Trip Permit (in lieu of IRP plates) is valid for 72 hours and costs $33, obtainable at the entry port or through a permitting service. For vehicles operating unladen and not transferable, a 30-day "hunter permit" is available for $39 through the Arkansas IRP department.

Overweight violations are a misdemeanor: a first conviction carries a fine of up to $100, and a second conviction within one year carries a fine of up to $200.

Permits are issued for daylight movement only. No oversized movement is permitted through the Greater Little Rock area from 7:00–9:00 AM or 4:00–6:00 PM on Interstate 30. No permits are issued for movement on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, or Christmas Day; if a holiday falls on Monday or Friday, the adjoining weekend is also restricted.

A durable "OVERSIZE LOAD" sign is required across the front and back, with 10-inch letters, a 2-inch stroke, and a yellow background. 18-inch red or fluorescent orange flags are required on all four corners of the load. No special light requirements are specified for the hauling vehicle itself, though escort vehicles require caution lighting.

Metal studded tires are lawful from November 15 through April 15, with studs not protruding more than 1/16 inch from the tread surface — violations are a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of $25–$50. Tire chains of reasonable proportions are permitted when required for safety.

Arkansas has no annual permit requirements.

Moving traffic violation penalties are doubled through a marked work zone when workers are present. "Road work ahead" signage also indicates higher fines apply within those zones.

A special DOT permit is required for any interstate or intrastate movement of a manufactured home; no municipality or county may impose its own local permits, bonds, fees, or licenses on top of it. A permit is required for each single continuous movement. Units in excess of 16'6" wide may be moved by obtaining an emergency permit, with approval based on maximum overall width, distance to travel, condition of the highway, and the volume and type of traffic.
